Dental Insurance: What It Covers and Is It Worth It?

Dental care is one of the most common gaps I see when families review their coverage. Most standard health plans don’t include adult dental, so a cleaning, a filling, or an unexpected crown comes straight out of pocket. In my years helping clients weigh their options, dental insurance is often a small monthly cost that prevents a much larger surprise. Here’s how it works and how to decide if it’s worth it for you.

What is dental insurance?

Dental insurance is a plan that helps pay for routine and major dental care in exchange for a monthly premium. Most plans are built around preventive care — cleanings and exams — because catching problems early costs far less than treating them later. You pay a premium, and the plan shares the cost of covered services based on the category of treatment.

How does dental coverage work? The 100-80-50 rule

Many dental plans follow a simple structure often called 100-80-50: the plan covers 100% of preventive care, about 80% of basic procedures, and roughly 50% of major work, up to an annual maximum.

  • Preventive (100%): cleanings, routine exams, and X-rays — usually with no deductible
  • Basic (about 80%): fillings, simple extractions, and some periodontal care
  • Major (about 50%): crowns, bridges, dentures, and root canals
  • Annual maximum: the plan’s yearly payout cap, often $1,000–$2,000

Exact percentages, deductibles, and waiting periods vary by plan, so always read the summary of benefits before enrolling.

What does dental insurance usually not cover?

Knowing the limits up front prevents surprises:

  • Cosmetic work like teeth whitening or veneers is typically excluded
  • Major procedures may have waiting periods of 6–12 months
  • Costs above the annual maximum are your responsibility
  • Orthodontics (braces) is often a separate add-on, not standard

Is dental insurance worth it?

It depends on how you use dental care. If you get regular cleanings and want protection against a costly filling or crown, a plan often pays for itself — two covered cleanings a year alone can approach the annual premium. If you rarely visit the dentist, a discount dental plan or simply budgeting for care may fit better. The right answer depends on your family’s history and needs, which is exactly what I can help you compare.

Frequently asked questions

Is dental insurance included in health insurance?

For adults, usually not. Most health plans cover pediatric dental as an essential benefit under the ACA, but adult dental is typically a separate plan you add on.

What is a waiting period?

It’s a set time after enrolling before certain services — usually major work — are covered. Preventive care is often available right away, while crowns or root canals may wait 6–12 months.

Can I use any dentist?

You’ll usually save the most by staying in the plan’s network. Some plans let you go out of network at a higher cost; others don’t. Check the network before choosing a plan.

Does dental insurance cover braces?

Sometimes, but orthodontics is often an optional add-on with its own limits. If braces are on the horizon for you or your child, tell me and I’ll look specifically for plans that include them.
