Short-Term Health Insurance: How It Works and When It Makes Sense

By Armando W., Licensed Health & Life Insurance Agent (State License #1180397). Published July 16, 2026.

Losing coverage between jobs, waiting for a new plan to start, or aging off a parent’s policy can leave you exposed for a few weeks or months. Short-term health insurance is one option to bridge that gap. In my years helping families and self-employed clients stay covered, I’ve seen it solve real problems — and I’ve also seen people buy it without understanding the trade-offs. Here’s a straight explanation.

What is short-term health insurance?

Short-term health insurance is temporary coverage designed to fill a gap between longer-term plans. It typically lasts from one month up to a year (limits vary by state), often costs less than a full ACA plan, and can start within a day or two. It is not comprehensive coverage and does not have to meet Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements.

How does short-term coverage work?

You choose a term length and a deductible, pay a monthly premium, and gain access to a provider network for covered services. Because these plans are medically underwritten, insurers can ask health questions and may decline applicants or exclude pre-existing conditions. Terms, renewals, and maximum durations are set by your state’s rules, so what’s available in one state may differ from another.

What does it cover — and what does it leave out?

Many short-term plans cover doctor visits, urgent care, emergency care, and hospitalization up to a policy limit. Just as important is what they often exclude:

  • Pre-existing conditions are frequently not covered
  • The ACA’s ten essential health benefits are not guaranteed — maternity, mental health, and prescription drugs may be limited or excluded
  • Preventive care may not be free the way it is on ACA plans
  • Annual and lifetime dollar caps may apply

Read the benefits summary closely before enrolling. According to HealthCare.gov, short-term plans don’t count as qualifying health coverage under the ACA.

When does short-term health insurance make sense?

  • You’re between jobs and waiting for employer coverage to begin
  • You missed Open Enrollment and don’t qualify for a Special Enrollment Period
  • You’re a recent graduate aging off a parent’s plan
  • You’re waiting for Medicare or an ACA plan’s start date

If you have ongoing prescriptions, a chronic condition, or expect major medical needs, a comprehensive ACA plan usually protects you better — especially since a qualifying life event (job loss, moving, losing coverage) may open a Special Enrollment Period that lets you enroll outside Open Enrollment. That’s exactly the kind of decision worth talking through with a licensed agent before you commit.

Frequently asked questions

Is short-term health insurance cheaper than an ACA plan?

Premiums are often lower, but that’s because coverage is more limited and you may not qualify for the premium subsidies available on ACA marketplace plans. The lower monthly cost can mean higher out-of-pocket exposure if you get sick.

Can I be denied for a pre-existing condition?

Yes. Unlike ACA plans, short-term insurers can medically underwrite, which means they can decline you or exclude a condition. This is one of the biggest differences to understand up front.

How long can I keep a short-term plan?

It depends on your state. Some states allow terms up to 12 months with renewals; others cap them much shorter. I can check the current rules for your state when we talk.

Does short-term coverage include prescriptions?

Sometimes, but often with limits or exclusions. If regular medications matter to you, review the drug benefit carefully — or consider an ACA plan instead.
